Garden

May means it's planting time, but we're holding off on most things until it's consistently warm. Dale has been able to plant things like peas, onions, and carrots. Check out the Irises though--cooler weather means they stick around for a bit longer.

Next time you get a package in a cardboard box, save it for church! Please remove all labels and tape, and drop your boxes off at the church for us to use in the garden. Please leave them on the covered porch of the garage. There will also be a GREEN pail for compost. We cannot accept meat, dairy, or bones, but (most) everything else is accepted. For a full list of compostable items, click here for more information.

Dale is still building his Garden Crew. If you're interested in learning more--and how to do your own gardening at home--please reach out to Dale Hamblin dalehamblin48@yahoo.com.

Bees

The St. Andrew bees will be installed soon. As we know, spring in the Chicagoland area rarely follows a predictable path, and this year’s colder temperatures have posed challenges for both the bees and their keepers.

As soon as conditions are consistently warm enough, we will open the hive at Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Northfield to confirm that the queen is established and brood is present. Once everything is in order, the hive entrances will be secured for the careful (and admittedly a bit nerve-wracking) drive to Mundelein.

Beekeepers often say that spring doesn’t move in a straight line, and that has certainly been true this year. Please know that we are prepared and ready to establish the St. Andrew colony as soon as the weather allows.
